Principal’s welcome

Dear Parents and Friends,

Welcome to Cavendish Primary School – a rural school with a great deal to offer. Cavendish Primary School has operated continuously on its present site since 1852. It has a proud history and a bright future.

The school is located in the south-west of Victoria, approximately 300 km west of Melbourne. The township has a population of about 350. The largest
regional nearby town is Hamilton, approximately 27 km south from Cavendish. Cavendish Primary School has extensive grounds and situated in a beautiful setting close to bushland on the edge of the township.

Two school buses service the school. One covers the district to the north of the school while the other covers the east/west zones.

The school is very much a central part of the community and has a friendly “open door” approach with many parents calling (and assisting) on a regular basis. Cavendish has a very close and supportive community with a great deal of input from the parent body and community groups. This community involvement is very important to the success of the school. Its strong School Council and Parents’ Club actively support the school. Parent involvement in school events is significant and is strongly encouraged. This is evident through the high turnout at events and on-going organisation of activities such as welcome breakfasts, sports events, working bees, treat days, fun events for the children, information evenings and interviews.

The school continually strives to live up to its motto “A Rural Tradition of Excellence” by providing an extensive and balanced curriculum that includes specialist classes in Music, LOTE (German) and the visiting MARC library. Cavendish PS uses ICT tools on a daily basis to enhance learning and to develop students’ skills, with sufficient laptops and iPads to cater for whole-class activities. The school also provides wide opportunities for intra- and inter-school sport: Picnic Sports day, athletics, cross-country, swimming, Sporting Schools programs, morning Huff ‘n’ Puff, Blast Cup cricket, golf, Hoop Time basketball, Jump Rope for Heart and Sporting Schools events. The school also has an Environment Centre, which is home to a beautiful garden. The teaching staff are highly experienced and are committed to achieving the best for all students. They regularly engage in professional learning, are reflective in their teaching and learning processes, and implement all programs whole-heartedly and effectively. There is a strong team element in all school activities and structures. The school is well resourced and we are able to know and understand all our pupils and their learning needs.

We are all very proud of our school and welcome you to come and visit us soon.
