Numeracy
We dedicate 5 hours per week to Mathematics learning. We also seek opportunities to develop Numeracy across the curriculum.
Our mathematics lessons are planned and delivered through our Instructional Model. Teachers include opportunities for students to apply the 4 proficiencies (fluency, problem solving, reasoning and understanding) in every mathematics lesson.
Literacy
Cavendish Primary School is committed to providing best practice education in Literacy. Classroom timetables include 10 hours of literacy weekly.
Learning in Literacy is delivered through our Instructional Model – the Structured Literacy Approach. 30 minutes per day is dedicated to Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) in Foundation to Year 2. Spelling Mastery sessions are delivered daily for students Years 3 to 6.
Reading and Writing are planned following Vic Curriculum 2.0. Every class receives direct instruction in morphology, vocabulary, syntax and grammar. Decodeable texts provide the basis for reading instruction. Students also complete novel studies. Writing lessons are based on The Writing Revolution approach. Students build through word, sentence, paragraph and text level.
Physical Education
All students attend a 1 hour session of Physical Education each week. Students are encouraged to wear their “Sports uniform” on the days when they have PE.
Each year Cavendish Primary School hosts its own Cross Country and Athletics Carnival (Picnic Sports). This is a terrific opportunity for our whole school community to be involved, joining in to help out and cheer our kids on. We also provide the opportunity for students to attend swimming lessons on a user pays basis.
We also actively seek opportunities for our students to compete against other schools through Hoop Time Basketball, Blast Cricket, SGSSA Athletics and Swimming.
Kitchen Garden
Our Kitchen Garden Program is integral to the learning at Cavendish Primary School. We have our own established community built Environment Centre with established fruit trees and vegetable garden. All students participate in weekly kitchen garden sessions where they learn about sustainable living.
Indonesian
Indonesian is the language taught at Cavendish Primary School. All students from Foundation to Year 6 access 1 hour of Indonesian per week delivered by their classroom teacher provided by Victorian School of Languages.
Music and Drama
Music/Drama is taught weekly and students have a dedicated music room stocked with instruments for our students to experience. The Community looks forward to our renowned whole school production each year.
